Retro '71

I’ve received several reader emails asking if my Retro '71 shirts are available for sale. It saddens me to tell you that none of my shirts are for purchase due to obvious copyright issues. However, this week’s Retro '71 shirt concept is another story—this shirt design could be for sale if fans enjoyed it and there was a demand. No Disney copyrighted art in this one!
The design is not based on a show or attraction, but on a rite of passage when it comes to the Disney Theme Parks. Within Adventureland at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, there's a "must eat" on every visitor's list: the Dole Pineapple Whip! If it's not on your bucket list, it should be. It's the most amazing frozen concoction in the parks! The Dole Pineapple Whip is a staple and is so popular that Disney added a whip machine in the Polynesian Resort back when the quick service area was refurbished. I'm assuming Disney will also add this frozen treat to the new Trader Sam Tiki Bar and the Tangaroa Terrace Restaurant at the Disneyland Resort Hotel.

For this week’s shirt I tried to take a whimsical yet kitschy approach with the design. I wanted to not only represent the whip itself, but to also reflect the tropical Tahitian feel of Adventureland. What better icon to represent the spirit of Oceania than a Tiki warrior? To throw a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor into the design, I thought it would be clever to have him holding a whip in his hands. Of course this fierce tropical warrior couldn't be so mean when enjoying this delectable treat, so his intimidating frown has been turned upside down. I can imagine after the park closes that the statues, carvings and idols from around Adventureland break their poses and all hit up the Dole Whip stand to reward their hard day’s work of entertaining guests.

So, would you sport the shirt? If enough people are interested I might be able to produce a small run! Let me know in the comments section if you're a Yay or a Nay. Well that's it for this week’s concept. Thanks for visiting Designerland, and remember: when a good time comes around, you must whip it!

  1. Yes please!! Keep using non-Disney fonts, etc and then you could be a one-man teefury.com of Disney shirts!!!

  2. Yes all the way. :) This is a GREAT design, with an awesome backstory.

  3. Love it, would wear for sure! The Dole Whip Float is a must for my wife and I each trip:)

  4. Definitely Yes. Dole Whip + Tikis!

  6. Yay! Could we see the warrior in green?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I want one!

I'd also like to see you come up with one for Liberty Square, my favorite land.

  8. Thanks guys for all the nice feedback. I'm gonna need a few more people interested if I wanna make this shirt happen. In order to drive cost down so people won't have to pay outrageous prices I'm gonna need 50 people. Maybe we'll get there?!?!?

Brandon, I tried various options of the design (brown shirt with various greens, yellow shirt with green print and then what you see posted here). Out of all the options I came up with the strongest design that still rang true to the Retro '71 feel is what I ended up going with not to mention one of my good friends helped me with picking the colors. I trust his eye more than anyone! Thanks Ian!!!!

J., there IS a liberty square shirt on my inspiration boards here in my studio. It will happen, check back soon!

  9. Put me down as a Yes!!!

I would buy one for sure!

  10. Thanks Richard. Didn't mean to question your decision. Was more of a "Can we get a green shirt too?" kind of question. I just like green.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh no worries. Well the ink color is actually a semi transparent ink and when printed on a dark or deep color shirt it fades into the shirt and the design gets lost. In screen printing if you print a design on a dark shirt you need what is known as an underlay (basically a white print of the design that the other colors of ink lay upon so that they are bright). If i did offer a green shirt it would increase customer cost and printing cost to add that extra layer aka screen. The design above is 2 colors: the transparent goldish brown and the pale yellow cream, keeping the shirt at 2 colors drives costing and production down. Make sense?

  12. I love that shirt AND that color. The image is probably a bit too large (I think there should be some more dead space, particularly just under the collar), but I'd still buy that in a heartbeat.

    ReplyDelete
  13. What can i say? I'm a sucker for full size prints! The over all height is only 17" unless i do oversize printing which will cost extra. Nott to mention i was worried the whip in his hands would be to small to read from a distance and all you'd see would be the idol. After all the whip is the key kitsch factor!

  14. I understand your point about the readability of the whip. It's really a personal preference thing - I prefer smaller shirt images stuck right in the middle of the breast with a good about of dead space buffered around it, but your preference for full-size images is certainly just as valid.

In any event, seriously, you should print that shirt. The Dole Whip must be celebrated and its glory shouted from the rooftops.

  15. I'd buy two. The extra is just in case i spill a dole whip on the first one.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That is fantastic. I would buy at least two!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would absolutely buy one if the price were 15 or below. I would absolutely struggle with the decision at 15 to 20. And I'd prefer 100% cotton. But it's a beautiful design (which I could say about all the designs on your site, actually).

    ReplyDelete
  18. WANT!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeease make them :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. There is an issue. The price on the front say $23 for a 2XL and then at check out it jumps to $25 plus $5 shipping and same with the 3XL.

What shipping method will be used and when will it ship?

Why not put with Zazzle or Printfection so people can continue to order after this is done?

    ReplyDelete
  72. @The Hawaii Guy

The pricing for the 2XL and 3XL has been fixed. Thank you for pointing that out to me!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Great, thanks! What about shipping method and ship date?

    ReplyDelete
  74. The shirts wont go into production until all the orders are taken (June 30th at midnight). This means that the production order will be placed on Friday, July 1st, printed sometime between July 4th and July 14th, and sent out on Friday, July 15th.

  75. I'm about to order it- but I have a question on the sizing (women's shirts can be so tricky) Can I ask what brand/type the womens shirts are? I'd like to research the sizing so I'd know what size to buy-- if it's more of a juniors cut, I'd need a large size, but if it's a true womens size, I'd need a smaller size. I'd hate to have it not fit! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  76. totally just ordered this!! amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Is there a sizing chart for the women's shirts? I have the same question as snapshots2011 above. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  78. On the newest post on the blog it lists the womens sizing!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I found you from the Tiki Central website. Very cool shirts! I ordered 2.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  80. WOW! Just found you on the web and ordered 3 shirts. Was also considering whether to go to D23 but will now look forward to seeing you there. Really LOVE all your retro t-shirt designs and hope you can get them into production. Been saying to friends for years that WDW needs to have better attraction and park t-shirts and you've answered my prayers! Your designs are much better than the 40th anniversary designs I saw last month at Mouse Gear.
